If advancing the environmental literacy of our students is key to addressing today's increasingly complex environmental challanges, what tools are needed in the classroom? Add your voice to the conversation alongside panelists:
- Assemblywoman Julia Brownley who authored AB 1998 in an effort to eliminate the distribution of approximately 19-billion plastic bags in California by prohibiting storefronts from distributing single-use plastic bags.
- Ethan Burke of Alliance Climate Education who co-founded an environmental education program and adventure that travels the United States on recycled vegetable oil and solar-powered school bus.
- Jordan Howard co-editor of "Green My Parents" who tells her story of how important it is to live an eco-friendly lifestyle at home.
- Ben Kay of Team Marine whose high school students collected 111 pounds of plastic bags within their Marine Biology classes, marched through the streets of Santa Monica to raise awareness for the importance of banning plastic bags and who has taught students how to have their voice heard with city council testimonies.
- Dave Hendry of Real Curriculum who is a nationanlly recognized expert on achieving student engagement and was instrumental in expanding the Math Trail project -- a teaching program that has students create math problems based on what they see in their community -- into a national Internet-based project.
Lee Fox of KooDooZ, a cause-based social networking site for kids, will moderate.
Open and free to all ages, this event is co-sponsored by KooDooZ, Social Media Week, ReUse Connection, and the Santa Monica Public Library.
Attendees welcomed on a first-come, first serve basis. Please RSVP and be on time! Auditorium seats 141.
- 2:00pm MOVIE "Bag It" See what happens when an ordinary guy takes on a global pilgrimage to explore our plastic world and understand our addiction to supposedly disposable items.
- 3:30pm Q & A with Assemblywoman Julia Brownley Are Californians "too plastic"? Will we be able to give up our 19-billion bag a year habit? With the failure to pass AB 1998, what should concerned citizens be doing to help with this community challenge?
- 4:00pm WORKSHOP "Social Media, Social Justice & Environmental Education" For many students, relevancy in the calssroom is extraordinarily low. Though digital natives respond best in peer-to-peer environments, schools continue to teach one-to-many. Additionally, too few schools are leveraging a resource kids care about most -- social technology. "Social Media, Social Justice and Enviornmental Education" is a workshop designed to explore how educators can bridge social media with social justice through environmental education.
- 5:00pm WRAP
Hands-on reUse, ReCycle, RePurpose
activities will be on-going from 2pm through 5pm
